Proposed Research Projects
- Proposal for testing Magnesium Phosphate Cements (MPCs) for use as exterior sheathing in arctic home REMOTE retrofits.
- Proposal for building our capacity to conduct applied research now that the RTF is becoming fully operational
- A collaborative proposal by UAF Cooperative Extension Service (CES) and CCHRC will provide an Energy Extension Pilot Program for rural Alaskans to help them meet the rising costs of energy.
- A National Science Foundation (NSF) collaborative project to test, innovate and design cost-effective, energy efficient, building technologies for residential housing.
- Proposals to develop our “Builders Books Library” to expand our library holdings, to open a Book Store, to catalog our collections and connect to other libraries and for CCHRC Outreach Education staff.
- A collaborative project with UAF, Chena Hot Springs Renewable Energy Center and others to develop a local bio-fuels industry.
- Proposals for equipment for controlled product testing, a calorimeter room to test heating & cooling appliances, and a guarded hot box to measure heat transfer through building materials and components.
- A Fairbanks North Star Borough proposal to take emissions measurements, fuel consumption and efficiency assessments from masonry heaters, pellet stoves, older wood stoves, newer wood stoves, fireplaces, direct-vent kerosene heaters, conventional oil-fired boilers, waste oil burners, and outside wood boilers.
- An NSF proposal with the UAF Institute of Northern Engineering to conduct experimental investigations using nanofluids to determine the effect of higher heat transfer rates.
- An NSF collaborative proposal with UAF and CRREL to use the data being collected at the RTF to help design new foundation systems for soils underlain by permafrost.
- Research into two new materials, Magnesium Phosphate Ceramics and Geopolymers for their potential applicability to innovative building components and in masonry heater production to make residential use more economical.
- Proposal to provide consulting services to the Denali Commission on the original design or retrofit planning of energy facilities, multi-use facilities, elder housing, and teacher housing throughout Alaska.
